The Scanner Barcode process in Appliance.io helps you verify and correct barcode issues so your inventory always scans accurately. This workflow ensures your UPC and Model barcodes stay in sync, prevents scan failures, and keeps your product data clean, consistent, and ready for fast warehouse operations.
📍 Accessing the Scanner Tools
To begin, click Inventory on the sidebar. Inside the Inventory page, locate and click Register Model Number — this is where all barcode corrections happen. When the pop-up opens, you’ll see two primary actions:- Regester Model Number – Used only when adding a completely new, never-seen-before model
- Update Existing – Use this anytime you’re fixing a barcode issue (you’re not creating a new product).
🧩 Understanding Your Barcodes
Before you begin, here’s a quick overview of the two barcodes you’ll work with most:
UPC Barcode
Your gold standard barcode.- Legally required
- Universally recognized
- Scans cleanly and reliably This is the barcode you will update in Appliance.io when necessary.
Model Barcode
A more detailed identifier that tells us exactly which model the product is.- Sometimes includes series numbers
- May change slightly across production runs If this barcode fails to scan, you’ll manually type the model number during the update process.
🛠 Step 1: Identify the Barcode Issue
If the Model barcode does not scan, don’t worry — this is common. Here’s what to do:- Manually type in the model number from the box.
- Mark the box (a small dot or sticker), so you know you’ve corrected or reviewed it.
- Proceed to the Inventory → Register Model Number tool.
🔧 Step 2: Update the Existing Model
Once the Register Model Number pop-up appears:- Click Update Existing
- Enter the Model Number
- The system will load the model details
- You’ll notice only one editable field: the UPC Code
🧾 Step 3: Scan and Save the Correct UPC
Now:- Click into the UPC field
- Scan the UPC barcode printed on the box
- Confirm the number fills in correctly
- Click Save
- ✔ The Model barcode is correct
- ✔ The UPC barcode is correct
🔁 Step 4: Handling Series Number Variations
Some manufacturers use series numbers (small added digits at the end of the model barcode). These can cause inconsistent scans — but the fix is the same:- Register the model
- Update the UPC
- Save
